Non-Fiction & Fiction

Non-Fiction

The non-fiction category includes a wide variety of topics.  Especially for self-publishers, non-fiction books can be very successful.  If you have knowledge in a field that would benefit others, then you should consider publishing a book on the topic. Types of books in this category include:

  • Cookbooks
  • Guidebooks
  • Reference Books
  • Biographies
  • History Books

Many non-fiction books can sell very well.  This is especially true if you give speeches or make presentations.  That provides you with a built-in market for your book.

But even if you don't give speeches on a regular basis, there are many avenues to promote your non-fiction book.

Fiction and Poetry

It is often thought that fiction books can be harder to market than non-fiction, especially for new authors.  But there are many exceptions to that view.  For example, Richard Paul Evans originally self-published the holiday story, "The Christmas Box."  Within a few months, he sold thousands of copies in the Salt Lake City area alone.  Because of the success of the self-published version, Simon & Schuster won the bid for the right to publish a hardcover edition.  The book has now sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

While this is an exceptional example, it shows that a well-written fiction book can be very successful!
